ST. FRANCIS PROVIDES TITLE SPONSORSHIP
The third annual Tulsa Tough Ride & Race is set for May 30-June 1, and 300 children will be eligible to receive free bikes presented by The Children’s Hospital at St. Francis.
Tulsa Tough aims to promote health and fitness through several initiatives, including the Tough Kids Challenge that generated national notoriety for the event in previous years.  The program gives 300 children a year an opportunity to earn a bicycle and encourages families to see bicycles not only as a means of recreation, but as a mode of transportation.
"Tough Kids is a model for other cycling events nationwide,” said Malcolm McCollam, Tulsa Tough Event Director.  “Instead of having their parents drive them to school, soccer practice or to a friend's, children can ride their bikes.  While they are having fun riding, they are adopting a healthier lifestyle, fighting child obesity and improving their quality of life.”
This year, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade-aged children will be eligible to receive a free bike by completing The Tough Kids Challenge.
The children must complete a three-part education program. It includes a large group ride on Sunday, June 1, a Safe-Escape class conducted by the Crime Commission and a bicycling handling Skills and Drills class conducted by the League of American Bicyclists.
Bikes will be picked up at the Skills and Drills class in time to participate in the group ride.  Parents are welcome and encouraged to ride with their kids by signing up for the Townie ride.
The Children’s Hospital at St. Francis’ free bike program is designed to encourage physical fitness and introduce youth to life-long health activities.
“The Children’s Hospital at St. Francis provides a superior product and service in the Tulsa area and we are pleased that Tulsa Tough Ride and Race is measured by the same standard of high quality and commitment to our community,” said Mike Dodson, Executive Director of the Tulsa Sports Commission.  “Our goal is to make Tulsa Tough one of the best cycling events in the U.S. with the support of St. Francis.”
Tulsa Tough was created in 2006 by the Tulsa Sports Commission and the Tulsa Wheelmen.  The three-day cycling festival designed to promote fitness and health lifestyles while showcasing the beautiful city of Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Tulsa Tough offers events and spectating opportunities for everyone with professional-level races, recreational and tour rides, kids and youth activities, live music and vendors in one action packed weekend.  More information is available at www.tulsatough.com.
